Audiodreams was established in 2006 by Brent Silby (aka “DJ Maestro B”) and a number of Secondary school students. Brent, an experienced nightclub DJ, had been running a DJ course at Unlimited (UPT)–a Christchurch City Secondary School–which, among other learning outcomes, involved the organization of a dance music event. Students Ben Reeves (aka “Jumanji”) and Julian Broms (aka “Miasma”) worked with Brent to plan the first of these events. It was an alcohol free rave, which featured a range of new and experienced DJs. The event was branded as “Enter the Dream”, which related to the name “Audiodreams” that Brent had suggested to the group. It was marketed across the city and was a huge success attracting over 400 young ravers. The venue (Level 5) had a capacity of 250, so the result was an extensive line of people awaiting their turn to “Enter the Dream”.
The success of “Enter the Dream” prompted the group to establish themselves as a business in order to run a series of similarly styled events. During 2006 and 2007 the group ran 8 successful raves with support from youth orientated White Elephant Trust. Events included state of the art sound and lighting, and visuals operated by Nick McGill. Brent Silby, Julian Broms, and Ben Reeves performed as each of these events along with Anthony Rohan (aka “Firefly”) from White Elephant and several other well known Christchurch DJs, including DJ Crisis, Seb Wild, and therobsta. Additional support in the organization of raves was provided by Jack Roxbugh and Thomas Teika (aka “Luna”).
Towards the end of 2007 Julian and Ben left Audiodreams to pursue other interests. The company continued, however, under the direction of Brent, who opened DJing opportunities to new students and formalized the partnership with White Elephant. In 2008 Audiodreams became the first party producer to run a rave in “Laser Strike”, a local laser tag arena. Party goers danced within the arena while also having access to free laser tag games. The success of “Raver Strike” prompted Audiodreams to develop a series of themed events, offering people another level of experience.
The future of Audiodreams will see the company continue to produce dance parties, raves, and clubnights for both the all-age and over 18yr markets. In keeping with the original concept, events will be presented by experienced and new DJs. Audiodreams remains committed to offering new DJs a chance to perform in front of large crowds.
